Mid-Winter HVAC Maintenance
We’re well into the thick of winter and already dreaming of warmer weather. But there’s no reason to shiver when a few simple winter HVAC maintenance tips can help to ensure that you stay warm all season long, as well as improving performance and efficiency.
Change or Clean Your Air Filters
New filters mean cleaner air and more efficient use. If you have a disposable filter, remove the old filter and insert a high-quality, new one. If your filter is washable, wash it per your manufacturer’s instructions and reinstall once completely dry.
Check your Vents and Return Air Grates
When your vents and return air vents are loaded full of dust and debris, it prevents your furnace from functioning at full capacity and could cause large issues to your heating system. If you find that there’s more debris than should be normal, you may need to look into a professional duct cleaning service.
Rearrange Your Furniture Away from Vents
It’s not uncommon for heating vents to be covered by home decor or furniture. As a rule of thumb it’s best to keep all furniture at least 10 inches from vents to ensure your HVAC can function properly.
Check Your Smoke & Carbon Detectors
As always, it’s important to test the batteries of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, don’t forget to replace batteries every six months.
Clear Chimneys & Exterior Vents of Ice/Snow
The outside flue pipes allow your heating system’s products to exit your home or building safely. A blockage could cause these toxins to build up in your home and be a health hazard. Always clear the vents for proper ventilation.
